Even after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, debate continues over who truly deserved the Player of the Tournament award. While India celebrated their title triumph with Sanju Samson receiving the accolade, South African legend AB de Villiers believes that Jasprit Bumrah was the rightful choice. Sharing his analysis on his YouTube channel, de Villiers praised Bumrah’s remarkable contributions throughout the tournament.
India clinched the trophy in Ahmedabad by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in a thrilling final. Samson earned the Player of the Tournament award for his consistent batting performances, but de Villiers argued that Bumrah’s impact in decisive moments was far greater.
“The contest between Samson and Bumrah was extremely close,” de Villiers remarked. “Bumrah finished as the leading wicket-taker, making him a strong contender for the award. Yet, I feel his performances in critical moments deserved even more recognition. The decision should have been much closer.”
Bumrah’s statistics underline the claim. Across eight matches, he claimed 14 wickets, equalling the tournament’s highest wicket tally. His economy rate stood at an astonishing 6.2 runs per over—a remarkable feat in T20 cricket, particularly when he was entrusted with bowling during the most pressure-laden phases of matches.
| Player | Matches | Wickets | Economy Rate | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jasprit Bumrah | 8 | 14 | 6.2 | Key overs in semi-final and final |
| Sanju Samson | 8 | 0 | – | Consistent batting, match-winning contributions |
De Villiers emphasised that delivering such consistency as a fast bowler in Indian conditions is far from easy.
“Bowling in India as a fast bowler is not simple unless you are Jasprit Bumrah. He had a few expensive overs, but when it mattered most—the semi-final and final—he produced extraordinary spells. I have rarely seen anything like it. In high-pressure moments, he shifts gears completely, almost as if he’s from another planet. He’s a phenomenal performer and an invaluable asset to Indian cricket.”
Bumrah’s ability to combine precision with composure under pressure has reinforced his reputation as one of the world’s premier T20 bowlers. Despite missing out on the official award, his impact on India’s victorious campaign remains undeniable, sparking ongoing discussions among fans and cricket analysts alike about the true definition of ‘Player of the Tournament’.
