A concert by acclaimed singer Zubin Natyal at the Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala descended into chaos on Saturday, as spectators and critics alike raised serious concerns over severe organisational lapses. Despite an overwhelming turnout, security measures and event management arrangements were widely reported as inadequate, leaving attendees exposed to danger.
The situation escalated even before the performance began, when a large crowd had already gathered on the field. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of people, security personnel reportedly closed all entry gates, inadvertently worsening the situation. Eyewitnesses described the scene as tense and chaotic, with spectators jostling and pushing, prompting police to intervene with a baton charge to restore order.
At least ten people, including journalists, were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Witnesses noted that while many attendees were absorbed in Natyal’s music, disorder spread across certain sections of the venue, necessitating police intervention to maintain safety.
Among the notable attendees were Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, former Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb, and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, underscoring the high-profile nature of the event.
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred. Organisers and spectators pointed out that crowd management failures at concerts and large-scale events have been reported previously, highlighting the need for stricter safety protocols, better planning, and effective crowd control measures.
The incident has reignited calls from local authorities and citizens for comprehensive safety audits and improved security arrangements for high-profile cultural events, particularly those attracting massive crowds, to prevent future injuries and potential tragedies.
While Natyal’s performance itself proceeded without interruption, the overall experience for attendees was marred by fear and confusion, and the event has prompted both criticism of organisers and concern for public safety standards in the region.
