The central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has dissolved its Chuadanga and Meherpur district executive bodies following public scrutiny over a leader’s age. The decision came shortly after Chuadanga district unit President Shahajahan Khan posted a message on social media celebrating his son passing the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations, igniting widespread debate regarding leadership tenure within student politics.
A press statement issued on Sunday evening and signed by central office secretary Md Jahangir Alam formally announced the dissolution of both district units. According to the press release, central President Rakibul Islam and General Secretary Nasir Uddin approved the measure, citing the expiration of the committees’ official tenures as the primary justification. Central leaders assured party workers that fresh executive committees for both district units would be announced shortly to revitalise local organisational activities.
The national results for this year’s HSC and equivalent examinations were published on Saturday. Later that evening, Shahajahan Khan uploaded a photograph alongside a congratulatory message for his son. The public display of fatherly pride quickly circulated across political circles, prompting questions regarding how an active student wing leader could have a child completing secondary education. The revelation sparked intense discussion both inside and outside the party regarding the prolonged tenure of student representatives well beyond their student years.
Confirming the dissolution, outgoing Chuadanga district General Secretary Mominur Rahman Malita expressed frustration over the circumstances surrounding the committee’s disbandment. While acknowledging that the executive body had long exceeded its term, Malita noted that local leaders had repeatedly petitioned central headquarters to organise fresh committee elections. However, he attributed the sudden dissolution to what he characterised as the president’s lack of discretion, remarking that family achievements ought not to have been publicised in a manner that invited political embarrassment.
The central leadership originally approved the two-year executive committee for Chuadanga on 5 June 2018. Despite the intended two-year mandate, the committee remained in office for more than six years. Responding to the central directive, outgoing President Shahajahan Khan stated that he raised no objection to the decision. Reflecting on his twenty-eight years of active involvement in nationalist politics, Khan expressed his willingness to transition into Jubo Dal, the party’s youth wing, should the senior leadership authorise the move.
