Chhatra League Leader Handed to Police After Campus Assault

Tension flared at Dhaka University’s Jagannath Hall on Sunday afternoon when a crowd of students and political activists apprehended a senior leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, subjected him to physical assault, and subsequently handed him over to local law enforcement. The individual was identified as Orko Saha, the Social Welfare Secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Dhaka University unit. The incident unfolded at approximately 5:30 pm on Sunday, 1 November.

According to hall residents and witnesses, the confrontation began when students spotted Orko Saha inside the residential premises of Jagannath Hall. As news of his presence circulated across the dormitory, a crowd quickly gathered, forming a surrounding mob. The encounter escalated rapidly into physical violence. Reports from campus sources confirm that local leaders and activists belonging to the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, spearheaded the apprehension and led the physical assault on the student leader.

Following the beating, those involved removed the injured student leader from the hall grounds and transported him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Medical personnel at the facility examined his injuries and administered necessary primary healthcare. Once hospital staff completed his initial medical treatment, the group escorted him directly to Shahbagh Police Station, placing him in official police custody.

The incident highlights the volatile environment that has persisted across major university campuses following recent political transformations in Bangladesh. In the aftermath of significant political shifts, residential halls at Dhaka University have witnessed heightened scrutiny, with general students and rival political groups frequently seeking out former office-bearers of the previously ruling party’s student organisation. On several previous occasions, similar confrontations resulted in former campus leaders being detained by student groups and surrendered to local police stations.

Officers at Shahbagh Police Station confirmed that Orko Saha remains in police custody. Law enforcement authorities are currently verifying whether any formal complaints, active cases, or pending warrants exist against him in connection with previous campus incidents. Meanwhile, university administrative officers and police units continue to monitor the campus environment closely to prevent further civil unrest and maintain order across residential quarters.
