Chhatra Dal Figure Detained With Illicit Tablets

A targeted anti-narcotics operation conducted by law enforcement personnel in the Amtali Upazila of Barguna District has resulted in the apprehension of a political student leader alongside another individual identified as a drug trafficker. During the tactical raid, police officers uncovered a substantial consignment of contraband consisting of 1,900 pieces of individual yaba tablets. In addition to the narcotics, a significant amount of cash believed to be proceeds from illegal drug transactions was also seized from the possession of the detainees. According to official estimates released by the regional police department, the financial value of the recovered yaba pills stands at approximately 570,000 taka.

Geographical Setting and Tactical Police Raid

The successful enforcement operation was executed on Tuesday afternoon, 9 June, at approximately 5:00 pm. The specific geographical location targeted by the police unit was the Khontakata Bottala neighbourhood, which is situated within the boundaries of Ward No. 3 of the Amtali Municipality.

Acting under strict directives from senior leadership, a specialised detachment from the Amtali Police Station was deployed to the area following the receipt of precise intelligence reports via confidential informant networks. The operational team was led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamal Chandra Dey and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Habibur Rahman.

Upon arriving at the designated location in Khontakata Bottala, the police officers identified two individuals whose physical presence and navigational movements appeared highly suspicious. The law enforcement personnel moved swiftly to intercept the suspects, preventing any attempt to flee the perimeter, and subsequently subjected both men to a thorough physical body search.

Identity of the Suspects and Recovered Items

Following their containment at the scene, the two individuals were formally identified by the arresting officers. The first suspect is Abdullah Al Noman, widely known by his alias Joni Gazi. He is the son of the late Gazi Abdul Jalil and is a permanent resident of the Nutunbazar Bandhghat area, located within the municipal town of Amtali. Institutional background checks conducted by the police department confirmed that Joni Gazi is a political figure, having previously served as the member secretary of the dissolved Amtali Municipal branch of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

The second detained suspect was identified as Sujan Howlader, who is the son of the late Yunus Howlader. His permanent ancestral residence is located in the Lakshmiganj area, which falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Madaripur District.

During the execution of the body searches on the two detained suspects, the raiding party discovered and confiscated packages containing exactly 1,900 pieces of yaba tablets hidden on their persons. Furthermore, the search led to the recovery of hard cash totalling 60,640 taka in various denominations. The police verified that this liquid capital was accumulated directly through the unauthorised retail distribution of narcotics within the locality.

Community Response and Institutional Actions

According to sources within the local community, the specific urban sector around the municipality had long been plagued by continuous allegations regarding covert drug distribution rings. The execution of this high-profile raid and the subsequent exposure of a political figure’s involvement have caused a widespread sensation and intensive public discussions throughout the Amtali Upazila. Local residents expressed a sense of relief regarding the ongoing series of sequential police operations, noting that the stringent stance adopted by law enforcement against regional drug syndicates has begun restoring social stability to the municipality.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Amtali Police Station, Abu Shahadat Mohammad Hasnain Parvez, issued an official administrative statement confirming the details of the double arrest. The station chief emphasised that the police department is currently maintaining a continuous series of special operations specifically designed to suppress multiple categories of regional crimes, including illegal narcotics distribution, extortion networks, eve-teasing, theft, and robberies.

Officer Parvez clarified that a formal itemised seizure list has already been prepared for the 1,900 pieces of yaba and the confiscated currency notes. He further stated that the legal processing required to file a regular criminal case against both Joni Gazi and Sujan Howlader under the statutory framework of the Narcotics Control Act is actively underway at the station. The Officer-in-Charge concluded his statement by reiterating that the police administration will strictly maintain its absolute zero-tolerance policy against all forms of drug trafficking and associated criminal enterprises in the future.
