A tragic incident in Lalpur upazila of Natore district has left a family devastated after an eight-year-old boy lost his life while attempting to save his father from an electric shock.
The incident occurred on Monday evening (27 April) in the Mohorkoya Hatpara area. According to local accounts, Abdul Al Amin, an autorickshaw driver, was charging his vehicle at home when he suddenly became entangled in an electric current. He reportedly cried out in distress as he was unable to free himself, drawing the attention of his young son, Abdullah.
In a moment driven by instinct and innocence, the child rushed to his father’s aid without understanding the danger posed by the live electricity. As he made contact, Abdullah was also electrocuted and collapsed on the spot.
His mother, Asma Khatun, acted swiftly and courageously by switching off the main power supply, an action that prevented further harm and likely saved her husband’s life. With the electricity cut off, Al Amin was freed and survived the incident, though he was left in a traumatised condition.
Family members quickly transported the critically injured child to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex. However, attending physicians declared Abdullah dead upon arrival. Medical officials indicated that he had already succumbed to severe electric shock injuries before reaching the facility.
Abdullah was a nursery student at a local kindergarten school and the only child of Al Amin and Asma Khatun. His untimely death has plunged the family into profound grief, with relatives describing the household as “completely shattered” by the loss.
The incident has also cast a shadow of mourning over the wider community, where neighbours gathered to console the bereaved family. Locals expressed shock at the heartbreaking sequence of events, highlighting the dangers of unsafe electrical handling in domestic settings.
Attempts were made to contact the Officer-in-Charge of Lalpur Police Station, Shafiqur Islam, for an official statement, but he did not respond.
