In the wake of the recent United States–Israel military operations in Iran, China has pledged to provide $200,000 in urgent humanitarian assistance to the victims and their families. The announcement, made by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscores Beijing’s concern for civilians affected by the ongoing conflict, particularly following the tragic attack on Shazarah Tayibah Primary School.

At a press briefing on Friday, 13 March, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jia-kun condemned what he described as indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure by US and Israeli forces. He stated, “The attack on the school and the resulting harm to innocent civilians constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and crosses fundamental boundaries of humanity and conscience.”

Guo further explained that China’s Red Cross Society has decided to channel the $200,000 in emergency aid through the Iranian Red Crescent Society to support the families of the deceased. “Acting from a humanitarian perspective, China will continue to provide necessary assistance to help the Iranian people cope with this crisis. Our deepest sympathies remain with the bereaved families and those affected by the attacks,” he said.

The spokesperson also expressed China’s deep concern regarding the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. “The sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of every nation must be respected and must never be violated. All parties should immediately cease military operations, return to dialogue, and ensure the conflict does not escalate further,” Guo stressed.

The Shazarah school attack, which occurred on 28 February in the southern city of Minab, reportedly claimed the lives of at least 150 schoolgirls, according to multiple international media outlets. This marked the start of joint US–Israeli military operations within Iran. Reports indicate that more than 1,300 people have been killed in the recent joint attacks, including Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and over 10,000 others have sustained injuries.

In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting US military bases in Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and various Gulf states. Since the beginning of the conflict, at least eight US soldiers have reportedly been killed.

Furthermore, in early March, Iran effectively restricted navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global energy supplies. Approximately two million barrels of oil and nearly 20 per cent of the world’s liquefied natural gas trade transit this waterway daily, amplifying international concern over potential disruptions in energy markets.

The table below summarises key statistics related to the conflict and humanitarian response:

CategoryData
School attack date28 February
Schoolgirls killed~150
Total deaths in Iran (recent conflict)>1,300
Total injuries>10,000

Analysts warn that if the conflict continues, its repercussions could extend beyond the Middle East, affecting global energy security and economic stability. China’s humanitarian pledge represents both immediate relief and a diplomatic signal advocating for restraint, dialogue, and the protection of civilian lives.
