A man who sustained severe burn injuries in a transformer explosion at Mawna Chowrasta in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila has died while undergoing treatment. The victim passed away on Friday afternoon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital, following more than a day of intensive medical care.
The deceased was identified as Md Yasin, 35, a resident of Kachina village in Birunia Union of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district. His father’s name is Ali Hossain. According to hospital sources, Yasin succumbed to his injuries approximately 34 hours after being admitted to the specialised burn unit, where doctors had been attempting to stabilise his critical condition.
The incident occurred late on Wednesday night, at around 11:00 pm, in the busy commercial area of Mawna Chowrasta under Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district. Witnesses reported that a power transformer located in front of the Shahid Super View building suddenly exploded with a loud bang. The explosion triggered sparks and flames that quickly spread to the surrounding area, including nearby buildings and the road.
At the time of the explosion, several pedestrians and workers from nearby shops were present at the scene. The flying sparks and intense heat caused burn injuries to four individuals who were standing close to the transformer. Panic quickly spread among local residents and business owners as the blast illuminated the surrounding area and disrupted normal activities.
The injured were identified as Md Yasin, Zakir Hossain, Rakibul Islam, and another individual whose identity could not immediately be confirmed. Of them, three victims were transported in critical condition to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for advanced treatment. Medical staff later confirmed that Yasin had suffered the most severe burns among the victims, affecting a significant portion of his body.
Local residents and witnesses suggested that the transformer may have been under excessive electrical load, which can sometimes lead to overheating and eventual explosion. However, officials indicated that a formal investigation would be required to determine the exact cause of the blast.
Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan of Shahbagh Police Station stated that Yasin’s body was formally received from the hospital on Friday night. According to him, legal procedures would be completed following a request from the victim’s family.
The explosion also raised concerns among local residents regarding the safety and maintenance of electrical infrastructure in busy public areas. Many shop owners around Mawna Chowrasta expressed fear that poorly maintained transformers could pose a serious risk to pedestrians and workers if regular inspections are not carried out.
