The death toll from the crash of a United States military refuelling aircraft in western Iraq has risen to six, according to confirmation from United States Central Command. The aircraft, a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker used for aerial refuelling operations, went down during a mission, killing all crew members on board.
Military officials stated that the aircraft was operating in the western region of Iraq when the incident occurred. Initially, the United States military confirmed that four personnel had died in the crash while two others were reported missing. Rescue teams were deployed immediately to locate the missing crew members. After search operations concluded, authorities confirmed that the two missing airmen had also perished, raising the total number of fatalities to six.
According to a statement from United States Central Command, the aircraft was carrying a full crew complement at the time of the crash. Officials emphasised that there was no evidence indicating the aircraft had been struck by hostile fire or accidentally hit by friendly forces. In a brief statement, the command said that neither enemy action nor friendly fire appeared to have contributed to the incident.
The crash has prompted an official investigation aimed at determining the exact cause of the accident. Military investigators are expected to examine multiple factors, including mechanical performance, weather conditions, flight operations, and potential human error. Such investigations typically involve both technical analysis of wreckage and reviews of flight data and maintenance records.
The KC-135 Stratotanker has been a cornerstone of the United States Air Force’s aerial refuelling capability for decades. Designed to extend the operational range of combat aircraft, the tanker enables fighter jets and other military aircraft to refuel in mid-air, allowing them to conduct longer missions without landing.
The loss of the aircraft and its crew marks one of the more serious non-combat aviation incidents involving United States forces in the region in recent years. Military authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the deceased service members and stated that further details will be released once the investigation progresses.
