Seven Football Statistics That Don’t Tell Truth

Goals, points, goal difference, red cards, and wins—these are the statistics every football fan instinctively tracks. Yet, beyond these headline figures, countless other metrics are endlessly debated among supporters and pundits alike. Numbers are cited, re-cited, and dissected, but not all of them truly reflect what happened on the pitch.

Many football statistics, while popular, do not necessarily influence the outcome of a match. Here, we examine seven such commonly cited stats that can be misleading.

1. Expected Goals (xG)

Expected Goals, or xG, calculates the probability that a shot will result in a goal. It is a mathematical measure, not a guarantee of scoring. A player may squander five high-quality chances (high xG) in a game, while another might score from an almost impossible angle (low xG). Ultimately, the scoreboard—not the probability—decides the match.

2. Number of Successful Passes

While pass counts are often used to gauge a team’s strength, quality matters far more than quantity. A team may complete 1,000 passes without scoring, while another could net a goal from a single counter-attack. For instance, in the Champions League Round of 16 on 11 March, Manchester City completed 508 passes, compared to Real Madrid’s 336, yet City failed to score and Real Madrid won 3–0.

3. Possession

Possession measures the proportion of time a team controls the ball, but holding the ball does not guarantee victory. Teams often cede possession intentionally, relying on a strong defence and counter-attacks. A notable example is Spain’s 2010 World Cup defeat to Switzerland: Spain held roughly 75% possession but still lost the match.

4. Distance Covered

Tracking the kilometres run by players or teams seems insightful, but ‘blind running’ is less valuable than intelligent movement. Teams chasing lost possession naturally run more, but more distance does not equal superior performance. Controlled play often requires less frantic running.

5. Shots from Outside the Box

Long-range goals are spectacular on television, yet statistically, they have a low success rate. If a team constantly shoots from outside the penalty area, it often indicates they are struggling to penetrate the opposition’s defence. High volume outside shots with few in-box attempts suggest frustration rather than tactical dominance.

6. Goalkeeper Clean Sheets

A team keeping a clean sheet does not automatically mean the goalkeeper excelled. A strong defensive line may prevent any shots on target, allowing the keeper to remain largely inactive. Conversely, a keeper making ten crucial saves but conceding once may be unfairly judged as underperforming.

7. Touches

The number of touches a player makes is frequently cited in analysis. Erling Haaland of Manchester City often receives fewer than a dozen touches in some games, yet can still score decisive goals. The critical factor is impact: when a player touches the ball, how dangerous are they? Quantity alone tells little about quality.

Football is a game of nuance. Statistics are tools, not truths. Context, quality, and timing matter far more than raw numbers, and relying solely on stats can obscure the real story on the pitch.
