In a sudden escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the United States conducted an unexpected bombing strike on the military facilities of Kharg Island, situated off Iran’s coast near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, describing it as one of the most powerful airstrikes in Middle Eastern history. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that the U.S. Central Command had “completely destroyed every military target” on the island, often referred to as the “crown jewel” of Iran.

According to CNN, Kharg Island serves as Iran’s primary terminal for crude oil exports, handling roughly 90% of the nation’s unrefined petroleum shipments. The attack, experts warn, significantly escalates the risk of broader conflict and threatens the stability of global oil markets.

A retired U.S. military officer speaking to CNN emphasised that the assault could push oil prices “beyond control.” Former U.S. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt remarked, “This strike dramatically increases the risk in this conflict. It is no longer simply about neutralising military forces or government positions; the focus has shifted to targeting Iran’s economic lifeline.” He added that the U.S. is effectively holding the island “hostage” to ensure the free passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Kimmitt warned that if the oil infrastructure on Kharg Island were damaged, Iran could retaliate against other key facilities in the region. Such actions, he cautioned, would send oil prices soaring and take global markets entirely out of regulatory control.

Kharg Island lies approximately five miles off the Iranian mainland and has remained largely intact during the first two weeks of the ongoing conflict. Its strategic importance in global energy supply cannot be overstated.

The following table summarises key data regarding Kharg Island and its role in oil exports:

Analysts emphasise that Kharg Island’s targeting marks a shift from conventional military engagement to economic warfare, highlighting the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure. Global oil markets, already sensitive to geopolitical developments, may now face unprecedented volatility.

With international observers closely monitoring the situation, the strike on Kharg Island could represent a pivotal moment in both regional security and worldwide energy supply, raising urgent questions about how to prevent the crisis from spiralling further out of control.
