In a striking display of military coordination, Russia and China carried out a joint bomber patrol in the vicinity of Japanese territorial waters on Tuesday, sparking heightened alert across Tokyo. The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) promptly scrambled fighter jets to monitor the incursion, signalling the intensifying strategic rivalry in the region.
The Ministry of Defence in Tokyo confirmed that on 9 December, two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers—capable of carrying nuclear payloads—departed from the Sea of Japan and proceeded towards the East China Sea. During the flight, they rendezvoused with two Chinese H-6 bombers, embarking on an extensive long-range patrol over the western Pacific Ocean.
The operation was further bolstered when four Chinese J-16 fighter jets joined the formation, conducting aerial manoeuvres over the waters between Okinawa and the Miyako Islands—territory internationally recognised as open sea. Russian A-50 early warning aircraft, along with two Su-30 fighter jets, were also tracked over the Sea of Japan, forming a sizeable aerial presence.
Japan’s Defence Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, characterised the manoeuvre as “a deliberate demonstration of power against Japan,” highlighting the national security implications. He emphasised that Japanese aircraft adhered strictly to airspace identification procedures and defensive protocols throughout the operation.
According to Russian media, Moscow’s Ministry of Defence described the patrol as an eight-hour mission. South Korean officials reported that seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft entered its air defence identification zone on the same day, signalling the regional reach of the exercise.
This patrol follows a similar incident on 7 December, when Japanese radar detected fighter jets launched from a Chinese aircraft carrier. Beijing has consistently denied any aggressive intentions, yet analysts note a marked escalation in Chinese military activity since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned last month that Tokyo would respond firmly to any threats, particularly concerning Taiwan. Russia and China have conducted multiple joint exercises in recent years, underscoring a growing military synergy.
Regional analysts widely interpret the patrol as a coordinated display of power by Beijing and Moscow, signalling growing strategic vigilance across East Asia. Observers warn that such operations may further strain the already tense security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
