Coast Guard Seizes Yaba, Arrests Trafficker

A targeted anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Bangladesh Coast Guard in the coastal region of Teknaf has led to the arrest of a drug trafficker and the recovery of a substantial consignment of illegal methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as yaba, with an estimated street value of approximately 40 million Bangladeshi taka.

According to an official statement issued on Monday and signed by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, the operation was carried out following intelligence reports indicating the movement of a large drug shipment through the coastal belt of Cox’s Bazar district. Acting on the tip-off, a specialised team launched a raid in the Keruntoli area of Teknaf at around 2:00 am on Sunday.

During the operation, personnel intercepted a private vehicle suspected of being used in drug trafficking. A thorough search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of approximately 80,000 yaba tablets. The authorities immediately detained the individual believed to be responsible for transporting the consignment. The vehicle used in the smuggling operation was also seized on the spot.

Officials confirmed that both the confiscated narcotics and the vehicle have been taken into custody as evidence. Legal proceedings against the arrested suspect are currently underway in accordance with national drug control laws. Authorities have indicated that further investigation will be conducted to identify additional members of the trafficking network and possible supply routes linked to the seizure.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by maritime and coastal security forces to curb the growing issue of drug trafficking along the southeastern border regions of Bangladesh, particularly in areas adjacent to Myanmar, which have long been identified as key entry points for illicit yaba smuggling.
