Madhupur Drug Raids Yield Major Seizure

Madhupur Drug Raids Yield Major Seizure

In a coordinated series of anti-narcotics operations in Madhupur upazila of Tangail, the Rapid Action Battalion-14 (RAB-14) has arrested five inter-district drug traders and recovered a substantial cache of illicit substances, according to official sources.

The operations were conducted on 6 June in and around the Jolsotra (25 Mile) market area under Madhupur Police Station jurisdiction. Acting on intelligence gathered through sustained surveillance, RAB-14’s CPC-3 unit from the Tangail camp carried out three separate raids as part of the government’s ongoing “zero tolerance” policy against narcotics trafficking.

First raid at Jolsotra market

The initial operation took place around 6:30 pm when a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw was intercepted and searched in the Jolsotra market area. Three individuals were detained on the spot. They were identified as Selim (35) from Habiganj, Nazma Begum (48) and Anwara Begum (47), both from Moulvibazar district.

Following preliminary interrogation, law enforcement officers recovered 15 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside a bag placed within the vehicle. Authorities also seized three mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be linked to the trafficking network.

Subsequent arrests and seizures

In two follow-up operations conducted later the same day, RAB-14 personnel apprehended two additional suspects allegedly involved in transporting and distributing narcotics across multiple districts. These individuals were reportedly active members of a wider drug distribution network operating between border-adjacent regions and central districts such as Tangail.

From their possession, law enforcement recovered 600 buprenorphine injections and 35 bottles of foreign liquor. Officials noted that buprenorphine injections, while medically regulated for pain management and addiction treatment under strict supervision, are frequently misused in illegal drug consumption due to their narcotic properties, posing serious public health risks when abused.

Organised trafficking network under scrutiny

RAB officials stated that preliminary investigations suggest the arrested individuals were part of a coordinated syndicate that routinely smuggled narcotics from border areas and distributed them using disguised transport methods, including passenger vehicles and goods carriers. The group is also suspected of operating covertly over an extended period to evade detection.

Seized items and arrest summary

Item Quantity / Details
Cannabis (Ganja) 15 kilograms
Buprenorphine injections 600 units
Foreign liquor bottles 35 bottles
Arrested individuals 5 persons
Mobile phones seized 3 units

All detainees have been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are underway under the Narcotics Control Act at the relevant police station. The seized evidence has been duly documented and included in official seizure records.

RAB-14 reiterated its commitment to intensifying anti-drug operations across the region, stating that surveillance and enforcement activities will continue in order to identify and dismantle organised drug trafficking networks operating within and beyond Tangail district.
