The Australian cricket team has arrived in Dhaka ahead of their bilateral white-ball series against Bangladesh, comprising three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Although the squad initiated their practice sessions yesterday, the visitors will be without the services of left-handed opening batsman Travis Head and designated ODI captain Mitchell Marsh. Furthermore, leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has also been ruled out of the entire tour.
Travis Head was initially scheduled to travel to Dhaka to join the squad after a brief rest period following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he requested personal leave, which was subsequently granted by Cricket Australia (CA). Addressing Head’s absence and looking forward to the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh in August, Australian selector Tony Dodemaide stated:
“Travis was initially included in both the ODI and T20I squads for the Bangladesh tour. However, he was later granted leave for personal reasons. We look forward to seeing him back in the squad for the home Test series against Bangladesh.”
The squad faces further complications due to injuries. Mitchell Marsh sustained an aggravation to an existing ankle injury during the IPL, which had already sidelined him from the preceding tour of Pakistan. Although team management anticipated that he would recover in time to participate in all six fixtures in Bangladesh and lead the side, Dodemaide confirmed that Marsh remains unfit for the 50-over format.
“It will take a little more time for him to fully recover from the ankle injury,” Dodemaide explained. “Mitchell will join the squad in Dhaka and begin his preparations specifically for the T20I series.”
Additionally, Tanveer Sangha was ruled out of the selection entirely after suffering a hamstring injury during the tour of Pakistan. To cover these absences, the national selection panel has drafted Matt Short, Ollie Peake, and off-spinner Todd Murphy into the touring party. Both Short and Peake were initially selected exclusively for the ODI matches against Pakistan but have now seen their responsibilities extended to the Bangladesh tour. Murphy, meanwhile, receives his maiden call-up to the white-ball squad as a direct replacement for the injured Sangha.
With regular ODI captain Pat Cummins rested for this tour and Marsh unavailable for the 50-over leg, wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis will assume the role of interim captain, reprising the leadership duties he performed during the series in Pakistan. Should Marsh fail to achieve full fitness in time for the shortest format, Inglis will retain the captaincy for the T20I matches as well.
The arrival of the Australian white-ball contingent occurred in phases beginning last Tuesday, with players involved in the Pakistan series landing first, followed by the remaining members travelling directly from Australia. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to commence tomorrow in Dhaka, whilst the subsequent three-match T20I series will begin on 17 June in Chittagong.
