A bomb disposal unit successfully neutralised a high-powered pressure cooker bomb in an open field in Savar on Wednesday afternoon. The controlled explosion, carried out at around 3:30 pm on 12 August, shook the immediate vicinity with a powerful blast as bomb technicians safely detonated the device.
The discovery dates back to Tuesday midnight, 11 August, when local residents near the Lalteq Ghora Mosque in Sadhapur Goper Bari—an area under the jurisdiction of the Bhabanipur police camp—spotted three unidentified individuals dropping off a blue plastic drum in an open field before fleeing the scene.
Unaware of the danger, curious locals inspected the drum the following morning. Inside, they found clothing, a copy of the Holy Quran, and a pressure cooker, which they removed and placed in the middle of the field. Upon realising the suspicious nature of the object, residents immediately alerted law enforcement.
Officers from the Bhabanipur police camp arrived swiftly, cordoned off the area to secure the perimeter, and requested specialized assistance from the Dhaka bomb disposal team. Upon arrival in the early afternoon, the specialist team evacuated nearby residents to a safe distance before carrying out the controlled detonation.
Savar Model Police Station has launched a thorough investigation to determine who left the explosive device and their underlying motive. Although the threat was successfully contained, the incident has left local residents visibly shaken and concerned about security.
The recovery follows another major security operation in Savar just hours earlier. On Tuesday night, officers from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit raided the ground floor of a three-storey building in the Shyampur area of Hemayetpur, Savar. During that operation, police safely detonated five pipe bombs controlled on-site, while seizing gun powder, chemical agents, and bomb-making materials, concluding the raid at around 1:30 am.
Security concerns were further heightened on Wednesday morning after a separate explosion occurred near the main gate of the Barishal District and Sessions Judge Court. While police initially characterised the incident as a minor firecracker blast, law enforcement agencies—including the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Crime Scene Unit—inspected the court premises, collected evidence, and tightened security across the area.
