Measles Death Toll Reaches 885 as Five More Succumb Nationwide
Five more individuals have succumbed to measles and suspected measles symptoms across the country in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 am on Wednesday. According to official data, four deaths were attributed to measles-like symptoms, while one fatality was confirmed to be caused by laboratory-tested measles.
With these latest fatalities, the nationwide death toll from measles and suspected measles symptoms has reached 885 since 15 March. Official breakdowns indicate that 786 individuals died with symptoms, while 99 deaths were officially confirmed as measles cases.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released these statistics in a press bulletin on Wednesday, 12 August.
The key epidemiological data and hospitalisation metrics recorded between 15 March and 12 August are outlined below:
Epidemiological Category / Metric Recorded Figures
New Deaths in Past 24 Hours (Suspected Symptoms) 4
New Deaths in Past 24 Hours (Confirmed Measles) 1
Total Cumulative Deaths (15 March – 12 August) 885
Cumulative Deaths from Suspected Symptoms 786
Cumulative Deaths from Confirmed Measles 99
New Suspected Cases in Past 24 Hours 941
Total Cumulative Suspected Cases 1,39,125
New Confirmed Cases in Past 24 Hours 84

The health bulletin further revealed that 941 individuals displaying measles symptoms were identified nationwide over the reporting 24-hour period. This brings the cumulative number of suspected cases since 15 March to 1,39,125. In addition, 84 new laboratory-confirmed cases were registered in the same period, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 17,469.
Hospital admissions due to symptomatic measles continue to place pressure on medical facilities. A cumulative total of 1,21,013 patients suffering from symptoms have been admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh since mid-March. Out of those admitted, 1,16,827 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged following medical treatment, leaving thousands under ongoing care in medical institutions nationwide.
Measles remains a highly contagious viral illness that spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets. Public health experts continue to urge parents to ensure timely vaccination for children and to seek immediate medical intervention at health centres upon noticing early symptoms such as high fever, runny nose, and severe skin rashes.
