In the history of Bangla language and literature, Muhammad Abdul Hai stands as a radiant star whose brilliance has never dimmed. A pioneering phonetician, an exceptional academic and an insightful writer, he transformed the study of Bangla linguistics into a clear, scientific framework that continues to guide scholars today. His intellectual depth and humanistic outlook placed him among the most distinguished minds of twentieth-century Bangla scholarship.
Born on 26 November 1919 in Muricha village of Murshidabad, Abdul Hai displayed extraordinary intelligence from a very young age. His father, Abdul Gani, served as a teacher and imam; his mother, Maymunnesa Khatun, nurtured his morals and curiosity. Even in early childhood, his aptitude for learning became unmistakably clear.
From Bardhanpur Junior Madrasa to Rajshahi High Madrasa, each step revealed his growing academic promise.
• 1936: Fifth in first division in the High Madrasa Examination
• 1938: Sixth in first division at Dhaka Islamic Intermediate College
Encouraged by Dr Muhammad Shahidullah, he entered the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka. There he achieved historic success:
• 1941: BA (Hons)—Second in First Class
• 1942: MA—First in First Class
He became the first Muslim student of the university to secure First Class in both degrees.
Beginning with a brief teaching post at Dhaka Islamic Intermediate College, Abdul Hai went on to teach at colleges in Dhaka, Chattogram, Krishnanagar and Rajshahi. His appointment to the Bangla Department at the University of Dhaka in 1949 became the defining chapter of his academic life.
In 1950, he travelled to the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, for advanced research. Under the supervision of J. R. Firth, he produced the groundbreaking thesis A Study of Nasals and Nasalization in Bengali, earning an MA with Distinction—an international recognition of his linguistic genius.
In 1968, while serving as a Visiting Professor at the University of Missouri, political turmoil in East Pakistan gave a malicious group the opportunity to strike.
• False accusations of financial misappropriation
• Defamatory reports in newspapers
• Instigation by familiar figures
These relentless attacks shattered him emotionally.
On 3 June 1969, he was struck by a moving train in Dhaka. Was it suicide or a tragic accident? No conclusive answer has emerged. Many believe that social hostility and conspiracies pushed him towards this devastating end.
The overwhelming crowds that gathered at his residence and funeral in Azimpur bore witness to the affection ordinary people held for him.
• 1961: Bangla Academy Literary Award
• 1996: Ekushey Padak (posthumous)
