Delayed Monsoon Advances to Cover Half of Nation

The seasonal southwest monsoon has successfully advanced across approximately half of Bangladesh’s geographic territory, bringing a forecast of increased rainfall for five administrative divisions. However, meteorological officials have noted that the monsoon has yet to develop its typical full-strength system due to counter-winds stemming from a western low-pressure atmospheric disturbance.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has confirmed that precipitation will persist on Wednesday, with the capital city, Dhaka, expected to experience showers after midday.

Regional Rain Forecasts and Temperature Drops

According to an official briefing provided on Wednesday morning by BMD meteorologist Md. Omar Faruq, rain and thundershowers are projected to hit various areas within the Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Chattogram, and Rangpur divisions. The meteorological office expects a higher volume of rainfall on Wednesday compared to Tuesday’s metrics. This increase in moisture and cloud cover is anticipated to cause a gradual reduction in day temperatures across the country.

Analysis of Recent Temperature Trends

On Tuesday, the highest temperature in the country was registered in the Jashore district at 37.2°C. Under standard BMD parameters, ambient temperatures floating between 36.0°C and 37.9°C are classified as a mild-to-moderate heatwave. Because Jashore was the sole district to cross the 36.0°C line on Tuesday, the rest of Bangladesh remained entirely free of heatwave conditions.

In the capital city, the maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 34.3°C, representing a 1°C drop from the previous day’s peak. Forecasters state that Dhaka’s weather will remain stable and tolerable on Wednesday, ahead of the anticipated afternoon downpours.

Delayed Onset and Shifting Rainfall Patterns

The southwest monsoon entered Bangladesh approximately one week later than its traditional arrival date this year. It has since expanded across the Chattogram, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Khulna, and Barishal divisions, establishing a presence over roughly 50 per cent of the country.

Climatological data indicates that the southwest monsoon typically generates more than 80 per cent of Bangladesh’s total annual precipitation. Despite this, the weather office has cautioned that the overall volume of rain during the current peak season may fall below standard averages.

This forecast follows an unusually wet pre-monsoon period; despite high temperatures in April and May, rainfall during April exceeded normal seasonal baselines by more than 75 per cent.

Summary of Key Weather Indicators

The verified temperature records, institutional baselines, and historical precipitation percentages are structured in the table below:

Weather Variable Documented Value / Observation
Highest National Temperature (Tuesday) 37.2°C (Recorded in Jashore District)
Dhaka Peak Temperature (Tuesday) 34.3°C (Declined by 1°C from prior day)
Heatwave Classification Range 36.0°C to 37.9°C (Mild-to-moderate)
April Pre-Monsoon Rainfall Surplus Greater than 75% above historical normal
Monsoon Share of Annual Rainfall Greater than 80% of national volume
Current Monsoonal Expansion Approximately 50% of national territory
