Two police officers sustained multiple injuries and a wanted suspect was forcibly removed from law enforcement custody following a mob attack in Savar, Dhaka. The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 pm on Tuesday in the Baktarpur area during a targeted operation to execute an outstanding arrest warrant.
The affected law enforcement personnel have been identified as Sub-Inspector (SI) S. M. Shamim and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Moshiur Rahman Khan, both serving with the Savar Model Police Station. The officers had deployed to the Baktarpur locality on Tuesday evening to apprehend Rafiqul Islam, a suspect carrying an active warrant under a narcotics case.
The officers successfully located and detained Islam at approximately 7:30 pm. According to a statement provided by SI Shamim, the situation deteriorated rapidly as they attempted to place handcuffs on the suspect. Islam and his immediate associates initiated a physical assault, utilizing bricks and sticks against the officers.
The confrontation grew larger as additional individuals joined the initial attackers, culminating in an aggressive crowd of 40 to 50 people. The mob physically assaulted the two officers, successfully disrupted the arrest, and fled the scene alongside the rescued suspect.
Following the outbreak of violence, a separate police unit operating nearby was dispatched to the scene after being alerted to the emergency. The backup detachment successfully extracted the two injured officers from the location, though the assailants and the suspect had already managed to escape.
The casualties were transported to the Savar Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical evaluation. Dr Fardin Abdur Rajzak, the emergency department physician on duty, reported that the officers were admitted into the facility at roughly 8:30 pm. He noted that both patients exhibited clear signs of physical trauma across multiple areas of their bodies and were retained for treatment.
The Inspector for Investigation at Savar Model Police Station, Nur Mohammad, formally confirmed the details of the assault to media outlets. He stated that the officers were actively performing their duties when the crowd intervened.
The Inspector added that a formal criminal case is being registered in relation to the assault and the forced escape of a legal detainee. He emphasized that police operations are ongoing to identify the participants of the mob and to return Islam to custody.
