A twenty-three-year-old mother of a nineteen-month-old infant is recovering after surviving a horrific ordeal of domestic violence, illegal detention, and an alleged murder attempt by her husband following relentless dowry harassment.
Sharmin Nahar Seema married Mainur Rahman Tanvir, twenty-four, on 8 February 2023. What began as a hopeful union quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal. Shortly after the wedding, Tanvir allegedly began pressuring Seema and her family for dowry money. Despite Seema’s family submitting to the extortionate demands and transferring 500,000 Bangladeshi taka to her husband, the verbal abuse, intimidation, and physical assaults continued unabated.
The violence escalated dramatically on Thursday afternoon. Between 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm, Tanvir once again demanded additional dowry payments. When Seema refused, he launched a brutal attack, beating her severely across her body with an iron pipe and a wooden stick. The aggression culminated in an attempt on her life, with Tanvir allegedly wrapping a scarf around her neck in an effort to strangle her.
Following the prolonged attack, Tanvir forcibly removed Seema from their residence on Sunday afternoon and placed her onto an outbound bus travelling from Gazipur towards Elenga in Tangail district. Fearing for her life as the bus journeyed through Elenga, Seema screamed for help. A bus assistant intervened, allowing her to disembark safely while her husband fled the scene.
Seema immediately alerted her father, who rushed to the location to rescue his injured daughter. She was subsequently admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka, where medical personnel treated her for severe physical trauma.
On Sunday night, Seema’s father lodged a formal complaint at the Tongi East Police Station. Station Officer-in-Charge Masudul Alam confirmed that police accepted the case on humanitarian grounds, despite the final stages of the abduction unfolding outside their immediate district jurisdiction. Describing the case as deeply heartbreaking, police officials confirmed that law enforcement teams are actively pursuing Tanvir, with an arrest expected imminently.
Attempts to reach Tanvir via telephone for comment were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls.
Now left to care for her nineteen-month-old child amidst severe physical pain and psychological trauma, Seema faces an uncertain future. She has appealed to the authorities for a meticulous investigation and swift legal justice against her attacker.
The tragic case underscores the persistent scourge of dowry-related abuse across Bangladesh. Although the Dowry Prohibition Act strictly bans both demanding and giving dowry, deeply entrenched societal norms continue to put young women at risk of severe domestic abuse and extortion. Human rights advocates routinely stress that giving in to initial financial demands rarely guarantees a victim’s safety, often escalating the perpetrator’s demands and violent behaviour.
