A tragic road accident in western Ecuador claimed the lives of at least nine people in the early hours of Sunday morning, after a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a sports utility vehicle (SUV).

The incident occurred on the highway linking Manta, a prominent coastal city, and Montecristi, a town famed for its Panama hat production.

 

Victims and Possible Causes

  • Among the deceased were two children, aged six and eleven, according to local media reports.
  • Juan Carlos Martillo, an investigator with the Ecuadoran Traffic Commission, indicated that the probable cause was lane infringement, suggesting that one of the vehicles may have veered into oncoming traffic.
  • Martillo also noted that, given the high number of fatalities, it is presumed that at least one vehicle was carrying an excessive number of passengers.
