Elderly Man Found Dead Near Secretariat Metro Station in Dhaka

DHAKA — Law enforcement officials have recovered the body of an unidentified elderly man, estimated to be roughly 70 years of age, from beneath the Bangladesh Secretariat Metro Rail Station. The station falls under the jurisdiction of the Shahbagh Police Station in the capital.

The individual was discovered in an unresponsive state at around 9:30 am on Saturday, 18 July. Police personnel immediately transported him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the attending physician pronounced him dead at approximately 10:00 am.

Police Investigation and Initial Findings

Sub-Inspector (SI) Tareq Haldar of the Shahbagh Police Station confirmed the sequence of events, stating that his team responded promptly to an emergency call from the area. Upon arrival, the police officers found the elderly man collapsed on the pavement underneath the elevated metro rail structure, which has become a focal point for daily pedestrian traffic near the government secretariat.

Citing accounts provided by local residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity, SI Tareq explained that the deceased appeared to have led a transient life. The elderly man frequently resorted to begging around the Secretariat area to survive and routinely sought shelter under the metro rail station’s concrete structure to sleep at night.

Initial diagnostic observations suggest that the individual passed away due to age-related illnesses, compounded by prolonged exposure to the elements. However, an official determination will only be made following a thorough medical assessment.

Identification Efforts and Legal Procedures

Because the deceased was carrying no official identification documents or personal items to establish his lineage, the local police have engaged specialised forensic services. The Crime Scene Team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been formally summoned to the scene to assist in identifying the man. Forensic experts plan to collect biometric data, including fingerprint scans, to cross-reference against the national biometric identity database.

The body has been transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital mortuary for a formal post-mortem examination. This autopsy will definitively determine the exact cause of death and rule out any possibilities of foul play. Shahbagh Police Station is currently preparing an unnatural death case filing, as per standard legal protocols, whilst officers continue to look for any relatives who might come forward to claim the body for burial.
