An elderly woman suffered severe head injuries after an intruder disguised as a beggar broke into her flat in Manikganj municipality and repeatedly struck her with a hammer before fleeing with a gold chain. The incident took place at around 11:30 am on Thursday on the first floor of the Baitul Aman building, situated in the North Seota neighbourhood. The victim, seventy-year-old Hajera Begum, is currently undergoing treatment at the Manikganj 250-bed General Hospital.
Local sources revealed that the victim was alone in the residence when the assailant, wearing a burqa, knocked on the front door while soliciting alms. Intending to offer help, Hajera Begum approached the entrance holding a bag of rice. However, as soon as she opened the door, the attacker launched a sudden and violent assault, striking her repeatedly on the head with a hammer.
The severity of the blows caused the elderly woman to collapse onto the floor, covered in blood. Taking advantage of her helpless state, the perpetrator snatched a gold chain weighing approximately 1.5 bhori (around 17.5 grams) from her neck and fled the scene immediately.
Hearing her frantic cries for help, neighbours residing in adjacent apartments rushed into the flat and discovered her lying injured on the floor. They promptly notified her family members. Hajera Begum’s daughter, Aleya Begum, arrived shortly afterwards and rushed her mother to the district general hospital for urgent medical attention.
Recounting the horrifying ordeal, Aleya Begum explained that the assailant had carried a polythene bag containing a small quantity of rice to maintain the deception of being a beggar. She expressed deep shock over the brutality of the crime, noting that her vulnerable mother was attacked without warning the moment she attempted to perform an act of charity.
Following the incident, a team from Manikganj Sadar Police Station inspected the crime scene. Officers are currently reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage gathered from the residential complex and surrounding thoroughfares to trace the escape route and identify the disguised perpetrator.
Md Monir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Manikganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed that a comprehensive investigation into the robbery and violent assault is underway. He assured that legal proceedings are being processed and that law enforcement personnel are actively working to bring the culprit to justice. The brazen daytime attack in a densely populated urban area has raised widespread security concerns among local residents.
