A 28-year-old electrician was brutally hacked to death by a group of unidentified assailants in the Sonadanga area of Khulna city on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm behind the Talukdar Community Centre, where the victim was standing alone whilst using his mobile phone.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonadanga Model Police Station, Md Rafiqul Islam, a gang of eight attackers arrived at the scene on four motorcycles. Armed with sharp weapons, the men launched a swift and violent assault, inflicting multiple deep stab wounds across the victim’s body. Local residents rushed the critically injured youth, identified as Mostakin, to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival. Mostakin, the son of Shahidul, resided near the Alkatra Mill in the Khulna Sadar area.
Detectives and local police officers have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the motive behind the murder and trace those responsible. No suspects have been formally identified or taken into custody yet.
The brazen attack has intensified widespread panic amongst residents, coming amidst a noticeable spike in violent offences across the city. Statistics maintained by the Crime Investigation Department of the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) paint a grim picture, revealing that the city has recorded 24 homicides so far this year.
Addressing public anxieties over the deteriorating law and order situation, KMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) M M Shakiluzzaman stated that rivalries over controlling local illicit drug markets and territorial dominance remain the underlying causes of most killings in the metropolitan area. Senior officers affirmed that police forces are working tirelessly to curb gang violence, pointing out that suspects in the majority of previous murder cases have already been apprehended. Authorities also highlighted recent operational successes, including the recovery of eight illegal firearms during targeted raids across the city over the past few days.
