In Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district, Bangladesh, the bound and bloodied body of a farmer was recovered from an irrigation pump house in the Umapur area of Baro Alampur Union. Police confirmed the recovery on Thursday morning after the incident came to light.
The deceased has been identified as Mofizar Rahman, who, according to his family members and local residents, was assigned to guard a Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) irrigation transformer at night. He had reportedly been carrying out this responsibility as part of a routine arrangement to safeguard agricultural infrastructure in the area.
According to accounts provided by family members and local sources, Mofizar Rahman went to the irrigation field pump house in Umapur on Wednesday evening, as he did on other days, to perform his guarding duties. On Thursday morning, a farmer named Shahidul Islam arrived at the field with cattle. He noticed that the door of the pump house was open and the transformer unit appeared to have been tampered with.
Upon entering the structure, Shahidul Islam discovered the lifeless body of Mofizar Rahman inside. The victim’s legs had been tied, and visible bloodstains were present on the body and surrounding area. Alarmed by the scene, he raised an outcry, drawing nearby residents to the location.
Locals expressed the view that unidentified individuals may have entered the premises during the night with the intention of stealing the irrigation transformer. They further suggested that Mofizar Rahman may have been killed after attempting to resist the theft. The transformer unit was reportedly missing from the site following the incident.
Police from Pirganj Police Station later arrived at the scene after being informed and recovered the body for formal procedures. Law enforcement officials have stated that an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death and the suspected theft.
The Officer-in-Charge of Pirganj Police Station, Nazmul Haque, confirmed the recovery and said that the matter is being treated with seriousness. He stated that police are actively working on the case and that further details would be disclosed after the initial stages of the investigation are completed.
