A violent confrontation between rival factions over local dominance in a village of northeastern Bangladesh has left one woman dead and at least 30 others injured, in what residents described as a night of chaos illuminated only by torchlight.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night at around 9:30 pm in Gunai village under Khagaura Union, Baniachang upazila in Habiganj district. The deceased has been identified as Aklima Begum, 45, wife of the late Jaban Ullah of the same village.
According to local accounts, tensions between two influential groups led by Salek Ahmed and Kamrul Islam Choudhury had been simmering for an extended period. The dispute, rooted in establishing social and territorial dominance within the community, escalated into open confrontation after weeks of growing hostility.
Eyewitnesses reported that both sides gathered in the darkness, using handheld torches and mobile phone lights to navigate narrow village paths as the confrontation intensified. The clash quickly turned violent, with crude weapons allegedly used as the situation spiralled out of control. The confrontation lasted for nearly an hour, leaving the village in a state of panic.
During the violence, Aklima Begum sustained critical injuries. She was initially rescued by locals and rushed towards Habiganj Sadar Hospital, but she died on the way before receiving treatment. Her death intensified fear and anger among villagers, many of whom fled their homes during the unrest.
At least 30 people, including men and women from both factions, were injured in the clash. Several of the injured remain under treatment at Habiganj Sadar Hospital, with some reported to be in serious condition.
Police from Baniachang Police Station later arrived at the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. Additional forces were deployed to prevent further escalation and maintain order in the area.
