Fatal Land and Fishing Dispute Leaves One Dead in Sunamganj

A violent clash between two factions over irrigation rights and fishing access in the Sunamganj district has left one person dead and at least 15 others injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the village of Pirergaon, situated within the Syedpur-Shaharpara Union of Jagannathpur Upazila.

Tensions had been building since Monday afternoon following a verbal altercation between Alamgir, son of Arab Ali, and Kashem, son of Achir Ullah. The dispute, which quickly escalated into physical fighting, stemmed from a disagreement over drawing water for Boro paddy cultivation and capturing fish from a local waterbody. Although the initial scuffle subsided, underlying animosity flared up again the following day. Around 11:00 am on Tuesday, supporters from both sides assembled, armed with traditional spears and sharp weapons, leading to a fierce confrontation.

During the melee, a 50-year-old local farmer identified as Motiur Rahman, son of the late Abdul Bari and a supporter of the Alamgir faction, suffered critical injuries after being struck by a súlfi—a traditional spear commonly used in rural disputes. Villagers rushed him to the Jagannathpur Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival. Dr Jannatul Ferdous, an emergency medical officer at the health complex, confirmed that Motiur Rahman had succumbed to his wounds before reaching the facility.

The brawl resulted in injuries to approximately 15 other individuals from both groups. Medical staff treated several victims locally, whilst two men—Mujibur, aged 38, and Ataur, aged 50—were transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition for advanced care.

Upon receiving reports of the violence, police units deployed swiftly to Pirergaon to disperse the crowd and restore order. Sub-Inspector Bin Amin of Jagannathpur Police Station stated that law enforcement personnel successfully brought the situation under control. The victim’s body has been recovered and scheduled for transfer to the Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities have initiated an investigation to identify the key instigators and prevent further retaliation in the area.

  1. Disputes over land usage, agricultural irrigation, and fishing rights frequently escalate into severe clashes in the low-lying haor wetland regions of north-eastern Bangladesh. As the seasonal Boro rice planting season approaches, water management becomes a vital lifeline for rural farming communities, making access to irrigation canals and surrounding wetlands a frequent flashpoint for agrarian conflict.
