A male individual was fatally shot by unidentified assailants on Tuesday evening, 28 April 2026, in the vicinity of the Shahnewaz Hall Bottola area, situated under the jurisdiction of the New Market Police Station in Dhaka. The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 pm, causing significant alarm in the bustling commercial and residential district adjacent to the historic New Market.
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports, the victim—estimated to be between 30 and 35 years of age—was targeted in a precision attack. A pedestrian named Mezbah, who assisted in transporting the injured man to the hospital, provided a detailed description of the event. He stated that the shooting took place in front of Gate 1 of Shahid Shahnewaz Hall.
Two assailants arrived at the location on a motorcycle. Without dismounting, they discharged a firearm multiple times at the victim. The eyewitness noted that the attackers fired three rounds into the victim’s head, one round into his left hand, and a final round into the left axilla (underarm area). Following the shooting, the perpetrators immediately fled the scene on their motorcycle, successfully evading initial capture.
Following the departure of the gunmen, bystanders and local residents intervened to assist the critically wounded man. He was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Upon arrival, the medical team conducted an immediate assessment; however, the duty doctors declared him dead shortly after his arrival.
Medical professionals at the DMCH emergency department confirmed that the deceased sustained multiple high-velocity projectile wounds. Their examination corroborated the eyewitness account, identifying clear entry wounds in the cranium and the axillary region. The severity of the injuries to the head indicated that the victim likely expired shortly after the impact of the initial rounds.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed the incident to the media. He stated that the individual was brought to the hospital in a bloodied and unconscious state following the shooting in New Market.
As of the latest reports, the identity of the deceased remains unverified. Police officials have not recovered any identification documents from the victim’s person, and no family members or acquaintances have yet come forward to claim the body. The New Market Police have secured the area surrounding Shahnewaz Hall Bottola to collect forensic evidence, including spent shell casings and potential CCTV footage from neighbouring establishments.
The New Market area is a vital economic hub in Dhaka, known for its high footfall and proximity to various university dormitories, including those of Dhaka University. An armed assault of this nature in a public thoroughfare during the evening hours has prompted concerns regarding local security and the movement of motorised assailants.
Law enforcement agencies have initiated a coordinated effort to identify the victim and track the motorcycle used in the escape. The body has been moved to the DMCH morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination, as per standard legal procedure in homicide cases. Further details regarding the motive for the killing are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. Police have requested anyone with information regarding the identity of the man or the movements of the motorcycle to contact the relevant authorities.
