Father and Daughter Arrested in Netrokona Over £19,000 Phensedyl Haul

A man and his daughter have been taken into custody by police in Netrokona’s Durgapur upazila following the seizure of 740 bottles of contraband Phensedyl cough syrup with an estimated market value of 2,960,000 BDT (approximately £19,000).

The law enforcement operation took place on Thursday afternoon, 30 July, in the Bagichapara area under Durgapur upazila. Police identified the detained suspects as local resident Shafiqul Islam, 56, and his daughter, Najmun Nahar Khanam, 23.

The raid was mounted following to intelligence gathered during the interrogation of a truck driver, named Jalil, who had been apprehended by police the previous night. Acting on information that a significant consignment of illicit substances was concealed on Jalil’s premises, officers searched a cattle shed on his property. During the search, police discovered 740 bottles of Indian-manufactured Phensedyl packed inside large sacks.

Subsequent investigations established that the seized consignment belonged to Shafiqul and his daughter, leading to their immediate arrest. Officers confirmed that each bottle of the banned syrup carries an estimated street value of 4,000 BDT. The confiscated contraband will be held as evidence before being destroyed in accordance with legal protocol.

Khondokar Shaker Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Durgapur Police Station, explained that officers had initially intercepted a modified truck containing Phensedyl on Wednesday night. Follow-up questioning of the driver led police directly to the stash hidden inside the cattle shed.

The police chief added that formal charges are currently being prepared against the father and daughter under the Narcotics Control Act, and both suspects will be produced before court following standard legal procedures.
