Father Detained Over Infant Death

A two-month-old infant has died in what police are treating as a suspected case of fatal assault in Fulgazi Upazila of Feni District, with the child’s father taken into custody following allegations that he fatally injured the baby during a domestic incident.

The deceased, identified as Mohammad Junaed, was the only child of Mohammad Sultan (30) and his wife Runa Akter. The family originally hails from Kakairgora Union under Durgapur Upazila, but had been residing for some time in a rented home in the Member Colony area near Fulgazi Bazar due to employment-related migration.

According to police and family accounts, the incident occurred on Thursday night (11 June) inside their rented residence. The mother, Runa Akter, alleged that her husband had long struggled with substance abuse and frequently subjected her to both physical and psychological abuse. She further claimed that on the night of the incident, Sultan sent her outside to purchase a drink after returning from work. Upon her return, she found the infant unresponsive.

Runa Akter stated that when she attempted to take the child to hospital, her husband initially obstructed her efforts. After repeated attempts, the baby was eventually taken to Feni 250-bed General Hospital, where attending doctors declared the infant dead on arrival.

Medical officer Dr Tanvir Mahmud, who examined the child in the emergency department, reported visible head injuries and confirmed that the infant had died before reaching the hospital. He added that a definitive cause of death would be established following the post-mortem examination.

However, Mohammad Sultan has denied the allegations. In his preliminary statement to law enforcement, he claimed that the baby slipped from his arms accidentally while he was playing with him, resulting in the fatal injury. Police have noted that his account remains under investigation and has not yet been corroborated by forensic evidence.

Following the incident, officers from Fulgazi Police Station recovered the body from the residence and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy. Authorities have confirmed that legal proceedings are being prepared and that further action will depend on the post-mortem findings.
