In the history of Bengali popular literature, certain names remain etched in the hearts of readers for generations. Romena Afaz was one such legendary novelist who established a distinctive place in Bengali literature through her exceptional storytelling ability, creativity, and vast literary output. She remains equally popular among young readers and adolescents even today. Her timeless creation, Dasyu Bonhur, is one of the most memorable characters in Bengali mystery and adventure fiction.
Romena Afaz was born on 27 December 1926 in Sherpur, Bogura District. Her father was Kazem Uddin Ahmed and her mother was Begum Asia Khatun. From an early age, she developed a deep passion for literature and began writing when she was only nine years old. Her first published work was a poem entitled Banglar Chashi (“The Farmer of Bengal”), which appeared in the renowned magazine Mohammadi, published in Calcutta. That modest beginning eventually led her to become one of the most popular writers in Bengali literature.
She married Dr Mohammad Afaz Ullah Sarkar of Phulkot village in Shahjahanpur Upazila, Bogura. Her husband’s surname later became permanently associated with her own, and she became widely known in literary circles as Romena Afaz.
Her first novel was Rokte Anka Map (A Map Drawn in Blood). Thereafter, she enriched Bengali literature by producing a remarkable range of social, historical, romantic, mystery, detective, and juvenile novels. The breadth of her literary contribution was extraordinary. During her lifetime, she authored more than 250 books, a rare achievement in Bengali literature.
The character that brought her immense popularity was Dasyu Bonhur. Bonhur was a mysterious and rebellious figure who stood against injustice and oppression, combating crime through his own unique methods. Generation after generation of readers have been captivated by the character’s courage, humanity, and thrilling adventures. Even today, Dasyu Bonhur remains a legendary name in Bengali popular fiction.
Romena Afaz’s influence extended beyond the pages of books. Several of her novels were adapted into successful films, including Kagojer Nouka, Momer Alo, Mayar Songsar, Madhumita, Matir Manush, and Dasyu Bonhur. These productions were warmly received by audiences and helped introduce her literary works to a broader readership and viewership.
Alongside her literary pursuits, she was an active social worker. She played a significant role in promoting women’s education, social development, and humanitarian initiatives. Her compassion for people was also reflected in her writings.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution to Bengali literature and culture, the Government of Bangladesh posthumously awarded her the Independence Award in 2010. She also received numerous honours and accolades from various literary, cultural, and social organisations.
To preserve her legacy and introduce her works to future generations, the Romena Afaz Memorial Council was established. Her residence at Jaleshwaritala in Bogura has been preserved as a memorial museum, serving as a valuable testament to her literary life and achievements.
Romena Afaz passed away on 12 June 2003. Yet her death could not silence her creativity. The characters she created, the emotions she portrayed, and the imaginative worlds she built continue to live on in the hearts of readers.
On the anniversary of her passing, we remember this iconic literary figure with profound respect. She was not merely a celebrated novelist; she was a creator of dreams, imagination, and adventure for an entire generation.
