On the 1,618th day of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, battlefield tensions escalated further following the loss of a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet during an active air-defence mission.

The aircraft malfunctioned whilst attempting to intercept incoming Russian airborne targets along a front-line sector. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the pilot successfully ejected before impact, sustained no life-threatening injuries, and was promptly evacuated to a medical facility for examination. Specialists and investigators are currently inspecting the crash site to establish the precise technical failure. The Western-supplied jet was part of the fleet donated by NATO allies, including the Netherlands and Denmark.

Concurrently, inside Russian territory, an assassination attempt targeted Andrei Cherezov, the head of the Russian Air Transport Laboratory. The firm is prominent for manufacturing the “Ovod” series of military attack drones. Prosecutors opened an attempted murder investigation after an unidentified gunman shot Cherezov three times in the stairwell of his apartment building in Tula, located roughly 150 kilometres south of Moscow. The executive was rushed to hospital in critical condition, while law enforcement authorities launched a manhunt for the fled assailant.

Deep-strike drone operations by Ukrainian forces also struck major Russian infrastructure. Long-range attacks targeted two key petroleum refineries: a Lukoil facility in the Perm region—located more than 1,500 kilometres from the Ukrainian border—and another major refinery in Ryazan, 400 kilometres from the frontier. The two facilities possess a combined annual refining capacity of approximately 220 million barrels. E-commerce giant Wildberries confirmed it evacuated staff from its regional office in Ryazan following the strike.

The repeated drone incursions have begun creating broader financial ripples across the Russian corporate sector. Russia’s largest state lender, Sberbank, is struggling to restructure loans after drone strikes disrupted online retail operations. Deteriorating credit quality among e-commerce firms—including Wildberries and its rival Ozon—has prompted around 300 affected businesses to formally apply for loan restructuring. Meanwhile, economic pressure mounted as the rouble fell a further 1.9 per cent against the US dollar, marking a cumulative depreciation of nearly 14 per cent since May.

At sea, Ukrainian forces reported targeting 201 Russian naval vessels across the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov over the past three weeks. These operations, which exclude strikes carried out by independent military units, ran alongside precision attacks on a Russian naval base and a radar installation in the Bryansk region. On the ground, Russian bombardments injured 11 civilians in Kharkiv, while regional authorities in Kherson reported one fatality and three injuries following a Russian drone strike.

In Moscow, legal and political crackdowns continue apace. Science journalist Daria Shipacheva was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Moscow court after being convicted of high treason over money transfers made to Ukraine. The Committee to Protect Journalists notes that at least 29 media professionals remain imprisoned in Russia. Separately, Russian security services (FSB) accused Telegram founder Pavel Durov of facilitating terrorism, whilst French authorities ordered the expulsion of Russian commentator Xenia Fedorova over allegations of spreading Kremlin propaganda. Furthermore, Ukraine has formally appealed against the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ease restrictions on Russian athletes, condemning the move as premature and contrary to the Olympic Charter.
