An earthquake was felt in Dhaka and various parts of the country. The tremor occurred around 10:38 am on Friday (21 November). The Fire Service has reported casualties and damages from different locations.
According to information received from the Fire Service up to 12:10 pm, a report was received of an eight-storey building collapsing in Armanitola, Kosaituli, in Old Dhaka.
Two units from Sadarghat and Siddikbazar Fire Stations went to the spot. No structural damage was found. Only some plaster and bricks had fallen off. The Fire Service did not find any casualties.
In Khilgaon, a brick fell from an under-construction building onto a nearby two-storey house, injuring one person. Locals took him to hospital.
A fire was reported at a residence in Block-F, Road-5 of Baridhara. Two units from Baridhara Fire Station are working to extinguish the fire. It was not known whether the fire was caused by the earthquake.
In Sutrapur’s Swamibagh, an eight-storey building was reported to have tilted towards another building. A unit from Sutrapur Fire Station went to the scene.
There had been a report of damage to a building at the Chief Adviser’s Office. A satellite Fire Station unit inspected the site and found no damage.
A seven-storey building on Abedkhali Road in Kalabagan was reported to have tilted. One unit from Mohammadpur Fire Station is present at the spot. No casualties have been reported so far.
A house fire occurred in Gazaria, Munshiganj. Two units from Gazaria Fire Station went to the scene.
However, according to police information, three people were killed when the sunshade of a building collapsed in Armanitola, Old Dhaka. Additionally, a child died after a wall collapsed in Rupganj, Narayanganj. More than a hundred people have been reported injured so far. Several buildings in various parts of the capital have been damaged, the Fire Service said.
Iqbal Ahmed, Radio Mechanic of the Earthquake Observation and Research Centre at the Meteorological Department, stated that the epicentre was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, located 13 kilometres east of the Agargaon meteorological office in Dhaka. The earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale.
