Florentino Pérez Re-Elected Real Madrid President

Florentino Pérez has secured another four-year term as the president of Real Madrid after defeating his challenger, Enrique Riquelme, in the club’s presidential election. The election took place on Sunday at Valdebebas, the club’s training facility. Pérez secured a decisive victory by capturing 21,741 votes, which accounted for 65 per cent of the total valid ballots cast.

In contrast, his opponent, Enrique Riquelme, received 11,814 votes, representing 35 per cent of the total vote share. With this electoral outcome, Pérez will remain at the helm of the club for another term, which is scheduled to conclude in 2030.

Voting Trends and Historical Context

Throughout Sunday, as voting progressed at Valdebebas, early projections from various media outlets and exit polls consistently indicated a substantial lead for the incumbent president, making the final result highly anticipated from the outset.

Pérez has served as the president of Real Madrid for the majority of the period since 2000, with his tenure only interrupted between 2006 and 2009. His history with the club’s presidential elections dates back to 1995, when he made his initial bid for the presidency but was defeated by the incumbent, Ramón Mendoza.

He successfully contested the position for the first time in 2000, defeating Lorenzo Sanz by securing 55 per cent of the vote, a campaign in which postal ballots played a significant role. Subsequently, in 2004, he won re-election by an overwhelming margin, gaining more than 90 per cent of the votes to demonstrate near-total support from the club’s voting members.

A Long-Awaited Electoral Contest

The latest election marks the first time Pérez has faced a genuine contested vote since his return to the club leadership in 2009. Following the controversial departure of Ramón Calderón in 2009, Pérez assumed the presidency unopposed.

Furthermore, during the subsequent election cycles in 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025, no opposing candidates stepped forward, allowing him to retain his position automatically without a formal ballot. Consequently, this campaign represented his first direct, contested electoral challenge in seventeen years.

Election Year Opposing Candidate Pérez Vote Percentage Election Outcome Electoral Context
1995 Ramón Mendoza Defeated Lost to Mendoza Initial presidential bid
2000 Lorenzo Sanz 55% Won First term; postal votes crucial
2004 None (Contested) 90%+ Won Secured overwhelming majority
2009 Unopposed Uncontested Won Returned after Calderón’s exit
2013 Unopposed Uncontested Won Re-elected automatically
2017 Unopposed Uncontested Won Re-elected automatically
2021 Unopposed Uncontested Won Re-elected automatically
2025 Unopposed Uncontested Won Re-elected automatically
2026 (Current) Enrique Riquelme 65% (21,741 votes) Won Term extended until 2030

Campaign Atmosphere and Underlying Triggers

Although the electoral campaign between Pérez and Riquelme began in an atmosphere of mutual respect, the rivalry intensified significantly during the latter stages. The race became marked by a series of counter-allegations from both sides, alongside traditional football-political debates regarding which high-profile players each candidate promised to sign if elected.

Pérez had initially been expected to serve out his previous term until 2029. However, on 12 May, approximately one month prior to the vote, he made the unexpected decision to call an early election. This strategic move followed a period of substandard on-pitch performances by the team and subsequent concerns regarding the club’s public image. Ultimately, the club members chose to maintain their trust in the long-serving incumbent.
