Former Awami League President and Four-Term Union Chairman Arrested in Mithamoin

Police in Kishoreganj have arrested Alhaj Borhan Uddin Chowdhury Bulbul, a former president of the Mithamain Upazila Awami League and four-time chairman of Ghagra Union Parishad. Officers detained the veteran local politician on Monday afternoon, 7 September, directly in front of the Kishoreganj Model Police Station.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, Borhan Uddin was travelling by rickshaw from the Kishoreganj court premises towards the Puranthana neighbourhood of the town. As he passed the model police station, officers intercepted his vehicle and took him into custody. He was formally placed under arrest in connection with two separate cases filed over violent attacks on students and civilians during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. On Tuesday, 8 September, he was presented before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
The arrest of the long-serving union chairman has sparked widespread discussion across the political spectrum in Mithamain and the wider Kishoreganj district. Despite his lengthy tenure as a local leader, Borhan Uddin was widely regarded as a sidelined figure within his own party during the Awami League’s period in power. In the most recent upazila council elections, he mounted an independent challenge against Asiya Alam, the younger sister of former President Abdul Hamid, narrowly losing the chairmanship in a tightly contested vote.
Following news of his detention, supporters voiced strong reactions across social media platforms, alleging that local political rivalries and ongoing feuds over territorial influence in Ghagra Union led to his “false implication” in the cases.
Abul Kalam Bhuiyan, Officer-in-Charge of Kishoreganj Model Police Station, confirmed the details of the operation. He stated that Borhan Uddin Chowdhury’s name was listed in two specific cases involving violent assaults during the student-led demonstrations. Following his arrest, police completed the necessary legal procedures before transferring him to prison under judicial orders.
