A tragic road accident on the Nilphamari-Domar highway has claimed the life of a former army person and left his family injured. The casualty, identified as 48-year-old Russel Bosunia (also referred to locally as Jahangir Bosunia), died on the spot. The incident occurred at around 12:00 pm on Thursday at the Nilahati Kalitala section of the highway.
The victim, a resident of the Chilahati area within Domar Upazila, was the son of Jakaria Bosunia. He was travelling on a motorcycle with his family when the fatal collision took place.
According to eyewitnesses and local authorities, the accident was heavily influenced by poorly managed roadworks on the highway. Sections of the road were undergoing structural repairs, leaving large ditches and deep potholes completely exposed without adequate safety warnings. While attempting to navigate around a severe crater on the tarmac, Bosunia was forced to alter his path. At that precise moment, a speeding passenger bus struck the motorcycle from behind.
The impact killed the former soldier instantly. His wife and two children, who were riding pillion, were thrown onto the road and sustained injuries. Following the collision, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn into a roadside ditch. Several bus passengers sustained minor injuries during the secondary crash. Local residents rushed to the scene to rescue the survivors and assist the injured family members, who were subsequently taken to a nearby medical centre.
The incident has sparked widespread anger among the local community regarding the negligence of the road contractors. Residents alleged that the state of the Nilphamari-Domar highway has been hazardous for weeks. Potholes are left unmarked, and no safety barriers or warning signs have been installed to alert drivers to the ongoing maintenance work. Locals argued that the total absence of basic safety protocols during the modernisation of public infrastructure is directly responsible for this loss of life.
Habibullah, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Domar Police Station, confirmed the details of the crash. He stated that the body of the deceased has been formally handed over to the grieving family after necessary administrative procedures. Police personnel have seized the damaged motorcycle, and operations are underway to recover the overturned bus from the ditch to secure it at the police station. An investigation into the driver’s conduct and the safety standards of the construction zone is expected to follow.
