In a significant move to safeguard farmers against natural calamities, the government has announced the introduction of crop insurance. Speaking at an event in Comilla on Wednesday, the Minister of Food, Fisheries and Livestock, and Agriculture, Mohammad Aminur Rashid, emphasised that the scheme aims to protect farmers financially if their crops are damaged by floods or other natural disasters.
The announcement was made during a rice distribution ceremony organised by the Ministry of Food at Shampur High School in Comilla Adarsha Sadar Upazila. The event was hosted in coordination with the Upazila administration and the Upazila Food Controller’s office.
Minister Rashid highlighted the government’s commitment to fulfilling pre-election promises. “Many believed these commitments were mere rhetoric. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, these pledges are being systematically implemented,” he said.
He further elaborated that initiatives such as the Family Card, Farmer Card, and monthly allowances for imams and muezzins have already begun. Initially, these programmes faced criticism, but the minister noted that following the change in government, they have now become operational and are yielding tangible benefits.
“Given that agriculture forms the backbone of the nation’s economy, and a significant portion of the population is directly engaged in farming, ensuring financial security for farmers is a top priority,” he added.
Minister Rashid also mentioned that alongside existing government support, the introduction of crop insurance will substantially mitigate the financial risks associated with natural disasters. Measures to enhance farmers’ economic capacity, including targeted loans, incentives, and sector-specific assistance, continue to be expanded and strengthened.
On the issue of national food security, the minister reassured citizens that sufficient stockpiles exist and that the country is well-prepared to meet demand over the coming months. “No one in the nation will face food shortages under our watch,” he affirmed.
The event saw the presence of Comilla District Commissioner Mohammad Reza Hasan and District Food Controller Nityananda Kundu as special guests, with Upazila Executive Officer Fatema Tuz Johra presiding over the ceremony. As part of the food support programme, 30 kilograms of rice were distributed to each of 1,879 beneficiaries in Amratoli Union.
| Initiative Name | Objective | Activities Provided | Current Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop Insurance | Protection against natural disasters | Compensation via insurance | Planning Stage |
| Family Card | Social security for general citizens | Food and medical assistance | Implemented |
| Farmer Card | Financial support for farmers | Loans, incentives | Implemented |

These initiatives collectively aim to strengthen agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and provide farmers with financial protection while increasing resilience against natural calamities.
