An elite law enforcement operation has led to the arrest of a young man who allegedly shot his own biological grandfather during a bitter domestic dispute in Lakshmipur. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended the suspect in the capital before recovering the firearm used in the assault.
Company Commander Mithun Kumar Kundu of the RAB-11 Noakhali camp officially confirmed the developments on Tuesday afternoon, 14 July. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Mohammad Ashik, was tracked down and detained in the Jatrabari area of Dhaka late on Monday night, 13 July. Following initial interrogation, a specialised team escorted Ashik back to his ancestral village on Tuesday afternoon. A subsequent raid conducted at the Hamid Ullah Patwari residence in Rashidpur village, located within the Bashikpur union of Chandraganj upazila, resulted in the recovery of an illegal firearm hidden on the premises. Ashik is the son of Ismail Hossain Faruk, whilst the 70-year-old victim, Nazrul Islam, is Faruk’s paternal uncle, making him the suspect’s grandfather.
Case documents and local insights reveal that a long-standing domestic dispute had been brewing between Ashik’s father, Faruk, and his mother, Aisha Begum. To resolve the marital discord, local community elders organised a traditional arbitration meeting (shalish) on the evening of 3 July. Nazrul Islam attended the meeting to represent the family interests. During the arbitration, a heated exchange of words took place between Aisha and several attendees. Aggrieved by the proceedings, Aisha immediately contacted her son, who was residing in Dhaka at the time, to complain about the perceived disrespect.
Infuriated by the phone call, Ashik travelled from Dhaka to Lakshmipur that very night. On the afternoon of 4 July, the dispute flared up once again. During the ensuing altercation, Ashik drew an illicit firearm and shot his grandfather. The bullet struck Nazrul Islam just above his left wrist. The elderly man was rushed to a medical facility by local residents, whilst the suspect fled the area to evade arrest.
Following the shooting, the wounded victim filed a formal case against his grandson at the Chandraganj Police Station on 6 July. The suspect remained at large until intelligence coordinates allowed the elite force to intervene in Dhaka. Commander Mithun Kumar Kundu noted that the suspect had been constantly changing locations to escape justice. Ashik has now been handed over to the Chandraganj police for formal booking and legal processing.
