Hamin Ahmed Questions Parties On Cultural Vision

As Bangladesh anticipates the formal announcement of its forthcoming general election schedule, the nation’s political landscape has entered a feverish state of preparation. Political parties are unveiling their manifestos, articulating visions for the country’s economic, social, and developmental future. Amid this charged political atmosphere, Hamin Ahmed, the celebrated lead vocalist of the legendary band Miles, has issued a clarion call to all contesting parties: outline your policies for music and cultural development—or risk losing the support of a significant segment of the population.

Taking to Facebook yesterday, Hamin Ahmed expressed his concern, writing: “The national elections are just around the corner. Musicians, creators, and music enthusiasts are eager to know—what are your cultural and music-based policies for the future of Bangladesh? In the country’s 54-year history, no political party has ever included concrete plans for music in its manifesto. While other sectors are addressed, music is consistently overlooked. We want to know—what is your plan for music?”

He also emphasised the scale of the nation’s music-loving community. According to his observations, by 2025, nearly 28.4% of Bangladeshis engage with music through radio, podcasts, and streaming platforms. Artificial intelligence projections suggest that by 2030, this figure will rise to approximately 51.91 million, representing roughly one-third of the population. “If such a substantial segment collectively declares they will not vote for parties or candidates indifferent to music, the implications are profound,” he noted. “Political parties must acknowledge the influence of this community.”

The post quickly went viral across social media, garnering widespread attention and support from musicians, lyricists, composers, band members, and music enthusiasts alike.

In an interview with a leading daily, Hamin elaborated: “For years, fellow artists and I have discussed this issue. Manifestos cover a broad array of topics, yet music and arts strategies are persistently absent. At public events, when music is missing, musicians are sidelined. We want clarity—what are the cultural and artistic strategies of the parties contesting the elections? To date, no party has articulated a definitive stance.”

Hamin further cautioned: “Recently, several perplexing incidents have affected music and cultural events in the country. Shows have been abruptly cancelled, performers instructed to halt music. We are not filing complaints against anyone, but we seek transparency—how will the political parties participating in the elections protect and advance our musical and cultural heritage?”
