India is preparing for a significant boost ahead of their upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, as star allrounder Hardik Pandya is set to return to the shortest format. The final squad is expected to be announced on Wednesday, and all eyes will be on the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, which is currently in Raipur for the ongoing ODI series.
Hardik’s return has been eagerly awaited since he suffered a left quadricep injury during the Asia Cup in September. After months of recovery and rehabilitation, he finally made a strong competitive comeback for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Tuesday. In that match, he delivered a complete allround show—taking 1 for 52 in his four overs and then playing a match-winning unbeaten 77, guiding Baroda to a memorable victory against Punjab. This performance confirmed his readiness for international action and provided India with renewed confidence ahead of the South Africa challenge.
However, while Hardik returns, concerns remain around vice-captain Shubman Gill. The young opener suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, where he retired hurt and played no further part. He subsequently missed the second Test—resulting in India losing the series 2-0—and is currently unavailable for the ongoing ODI series.
Medical assessments indicate that Gill’s injury is associated with a pinched nerve, requiring a minimum rest period of five weeks before he can return to training. He has already checked into the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to continue his rehabilitation program. With the timeline still uncertain, the selectors are preparing for the likely possibility that Gill may not be ready for the T20Is.
If Gill is ruled out, India will need to find his replacement at the top of the order. Abhishek Sharma is expected to retain his spot as an opener, but the debate now centers around who should partner him—Sanju Samson or Yashasvi Jaiswal. Samson, part of the recent T20I squad that toured Australia, played only two matches and batted just once. Jaiswal was not part of that squad but remains a strong contender due to his aggressive style and recent form.
Beyond the opening slot, the selectors are also discussing the inclusion of Riyan Parag, who last represented India in a T20I series against Bangladesh in 2024. Parag has been in notable form and is currently leading Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, making a strong case for his return to the national setup.
The upcoming T20I series is scheduled to begin on December 9 in Cuttack, followed by matches in New Chandigarh (December 11), Dharamsala (December 14), Lucknow (December 17), and Ahmedabad (December 19). With Suryakumar Yadav leading the side, India enter the series as the top-ranked T20I team in the world, while South Africa hold the fifth position.
With the T20 World Cup approaching, this series is expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s squad and strategy—and Hardik Pandya’s return could not have come at a better time.
