A gruesome discovery has been made in southern Bangladesh after the headless body of a seasonal trader was recovered from a canal in Barguna, following an overnight disappearance that has shocked the local community. Police have launched a full investigation into the suspected murder, while efforts continue to locate the missing head.
The victim, identified as Md. Shamim Bapari, aged around 40, was the son of Monser Ali Bapari from Gourichanna village. He was engaged in seasonal trading activities to support his family.
According to police and family accounts, Shamim went missing on Sunday night after last being seen in the area. His relatives searched extensively through the night but found no trace of him. The following morning, on Monday around 11:00 a.m., his headless body was discovered in the Boro Gourichanna canal in Barguna Sadar Upazila after locals noticed bloodstains and a pair of shoes near the water’s edge.
The discovery triggered immediate alarm in the community, prompting a joint response from Bangladesh Police and the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence. While the body was recovered, the victim’s head remains missing despite an extensive search operation conducted in the canal, which lasted several hours.
Family members described a harrowing sequence of events. His daughter recalled that her father had gone to the local market on Sunday evening but never returned home. His wife and children spent the night contacting relatives and searching nearby areas, initially believing he might have been delayed or visiting someone. The next morning, the discovery of bloodstains, followed by footwear near the canal, led to the tragic recovery of his remains from beneath water hyacinths.
Police officials stated that the body showed signs of severe violence, with the torso found without the head. Investigators are now examining possible motives, although the family claims the victim had no known personal enmities.
