A shocking case of professional negligence has come to light in Comilla’s Debidwar upazila, where a school headmaster has been arrested alongside a student for outsourcing the evaluation of public exam papers. The Detective Branch (DB) of police apprehended the duo on Saturday night during a targeted raid in the Abdullahpur area. The arrests follow widespread public outrage after a video capturing the illicit grading session circulated widely on social media platforms.
The primary suspect, Mohammad Bachchu Mia, is a senior teacher currently serving as the acting headmaster of Abdullahpur Haji Amir Ali High School. The co-accused is Mehedi Hasan, a tenth-grade student enrolled at the very same institution. Assistant Superintendent of Police Shahin Alam of the Debidwar Circle confirmed the developments, indicating that the incident has raised severe concerns regarding the integrity of the national examination system.
The controversy erupted when footage emerged showing young Mehedi Hasan seated in a classroom, methodically marking answer scripts for the 2026 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) General Science examination. Rather than personally evaluating the scripts as mandated by his official appointment, Bachchu Mia had delegated the highly sensitive task to the teenager. The video quickly went viral, prompting extensive coverage across mainstream news outlets and forcing a swift response from regulatory authorities.
The scandal drew immediate condemnation from the Minister for Education and Primary and Mass Education, Dr A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milan. Appalled by the gross breach of trust, the minister ordered an immediate investigation and demanded strict legal measures against those undermining the nation’s academic standards. Following ministerial directives, the Deputy Controller of Examinations from the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Comilla, lodged a formal complaint at the Debidwar Police Station on Saturday, leading to a regular criminal case against both the teacher and the student.
Law enforcement personnel moved swiftly following the filing of the case. A specialised DB team tracked the suspects to the Abdullahpur locality on Saturday night and placed them under arrest. Mohammad Shamsul Alam Shah, the Officer-in-Charge of the Comilla DB, stated that the arrests were executed based on the definitive allegations outlined in the First Information Report (FIR). The suspects remain in custody as investigators coordinate with the education board to determine the extent of the negligence and ensure appropriate judicial action follows.
