Sleeping Farmer Slit Throat in Brutal Gaibandha Domestic Feud

A fifty-five-year-old farmer was brutally murdered in his sleep by unidentified assailants in the early hours of Sunday, 12 July 2026. The horrific incident occurred inside the victim’s residence in South Kanchipara (Majhipara) village under the Kanchipara union of Fulchhari upazila, Gaibandha. Law enforcement personnel recovered a blood-stained knife from the crime scene shortly after arriving.

The deceased, Shahjalal, was the son of the late Niamat Ullah. He sustained his livelihood through agricultural farming, supplemented by traditional bamboo craftsmanship. The tragic death of a quiet tradesman has left the rural neighbourhood gripped by shock and distress.

According to local and police sources, Shahjalal had retired to bed on Saturday night after having dinner with his family. While his wife, Goleda Begum, slept inside the main house, Shahjalal slept in a separate room situated along the corrugated tin-shade veranda. At approximately 2:00 am, Goleda woke up to the sound of muffled groaning coming from the veranda. Upon rushing to the room, she discovered her husband lying in a pool of blood with his throat slit. A sharp knife used in the assault was discarded next to the bed. Her frantic screams alerted relatives and neighbours, who immediately contacted the police.

The victim’s family alleges that the murder is the culmination of a long-standing domestic dispute. Panju Mia, the son of the deceased, directly accused his cousin, Golam Hossain, of committing the murder and fleeing the scene. According to the son, Goleda Begum caught a glimpse of Golam escaping the veranda in the dark.

The underlying conflict stems from prolonged domestic abuse. Golam Hossain reportedly subjected his wife to severe physical torment over a long period. Shahjalal, acting as a paternal uncle, routinely intervened to protect the woman. Approximately five months prior to the murder, Golam attacked his wife with a hoe. Following that violent incident, Shahjalal arranged for the woman to return to her parental home for safety. This intervention allegedly infuriated Golam, who harboured a deep vendetta against Shahjalal’s household.

Durul Hoda, the Officer-in-Charge of Fulchhari Police Station, confirmed the details of the crime. Preliminary forensic observations suggest the killer gained access to the room by removing a portion of the wooden floorboards beneath the veranda structure. The assailant then took advantage of the darkness to slit the throat of the sleeping farmer.

The police have sent the body to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination. Detectives have launched targeted operations to track down and apprehend the suspect, who has been missing since the incident. The local police department stated that the familial allegations are being treated with the utmost seriousness as the formal murder investigation proceeds.
