Houthi Missile Barrage Forces Saudi Crown Prince into Safehouses as Air Defences Falter

Saudi Arabian authorities have placed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman under extraordinary security measures, shuttling the 41-year-old de facto ruler between heavily fortified bunker-equipped royal palaces as ballistic missile and drone strikes by Iran-backed Houthi rebels intensify across the kingdom.

The security overhaul, reported by The Wall Street Journal, follows a devastating strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. Marking the deadliest assault on Saudi territory in over a decade, the barrage left at least 13 people dead and more than 300 injured. The targeted airport remains completely shut down, with aviation research firm Cirium reporting that approximately 60 per cent of scheduled flights in and out of the capital have been cancelled. A Houthi military spokesman publicly claimed responsibility for the operation, warning that Saudi aviation hubs will remain primary targets. Indeed, the Riyadh facility has suffered four separate attacks over the past five days alone.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has not been seen in public since attending a national blood donation drive last Tuesday. Officials responsible for royal protection revealed that an elite, highly vetted security detail has assumed direct oversight of his movements, constantly relocating him to mitigate escalating assassination and targeted-strike risks. Requests for comment submitted to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs have so far yielded no official response.

The current crisis represents a catastrophic collapse of the fragile truce brokered between Riyadh and the Yemen-based Houthi movement in 2022 following years of exhausting civil conflict. The regional stability achieved under that ceasefire unspooled rapidly after broader hostilities erupted involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Tensions reached a flashpoint when Saudi forces fired upon an Iranian aircraft attempting to take off from Sana’a Airport in Yemen, which was carrying Houthi delegates bound for Tehran. The Houthis cited the interception as direct justification for resuming unrestricted long-range operations against Saudi infrastructure.

In response to the airport devastation, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman vowed that the kingdom’s retaliation would match the severity of the aggression. However, behind closed doors, senior officials acknowledge a critical vulnerability: Saudi Arabia’s air defence stockpiles are depleting at an alarming rate. Interceptor missiles used to neutralize incoming threat vectors are running dangerously low after days of relentless bombardment.

To prevent an operational blackout of its sky shield, Riyadh reached out to international partners last month, appealing to France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, and Egypt for urgent military assistance and ammunition resupplies. However, global defense supply chains remain stretched; an official informed the Associated Press that even the United States is contending with reduced missile inventories due to its ongoing strategic commitments alongside regional allies.

Meanwhile, Washington has indicated potential direct intervention. US President Donald Trump stated that his administration is considering joining Saudi air retaliatory strikes against Houthi strongholds in Yemen. Additionally, coalition signatories to Riyadh’s Mecca Agreement have reaffirmed their diplomatic and defense support for the kingdom as the conflict threatens to engulf the wider Arabian Peninsula.
