In Memory Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Nuruzzaman Bir Uttam

Among those who remain immortal in the history of Bangladesh’s মহান Liberation War, one of the most distinguished heroic commanders is Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Nuruzzaman. As a professional military officer, visionary organiser, and uncompromising patriot, he continues to shine in the nation’s consciousness.

He was born on 24 March 1925 in Jessore. In his academic life, he was talented and highly capable. While studying at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata, he was inspired by patriotism and joined the Royal Indian Navy. Later, he entered the army and fought on behalf of the Allied Forces in the Burma and Sumatra fronts during the Second World War.

After the partition of India, although he served in the Pakistan Army, his stance against discrimination and injustice remained firm. In 1969, due to principled differences, he voluntarily retired from service—an act that reflected his integrity and strong sense of justice.

Following the brutal crackdown by Pakistani forces on the night of 25 March 1971, he could no longer remain silent. He actively participated in the Liberation War and assumed responsibility as the Sector Commander of Sector 7. Under his leadership, fierce resistance was organised across Rajshahi, Bogura, Pabna, and Dinajpur regions, which weakened enemy forces and accelerated the path to independence.

Even after the war, he remained equally active in independent Bangladesh. From movements demanding the trial of war criminals to progressive politics and the establishment of democratic rights, his voice remained firm and uncompromising. He was also a leading figure in the movement initiated under the leadership of Jahanara Imam.

He was a writer, thinker, and organiser. His books, including Swadesh Chinta and Muktijuddho o Rajniti, reflect history, struggle, and visions for the nation’s future.

In his personal life, he was culturally aware and wise. His family continues to make significant contributions to the cultural sphere of the country.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery in the Liberation War, the Government of Bangladesh honoured him with the title “Bir Uttam”, a lasting recognition of his sacrifice and courage.

He passed away on 6 May 2011 in Dhaka. However, his ideals, his struggle, and his dreams remain ever alive in the heart of Bangladesh.
