In Memory of Abul Hasan—The Poet Who Left Too Soon

Published: 26 Nov 2025, 09:26 am

Today, 26 November, marks the death anniversary of Abul Hasan—one of the brightest, most fire-spirited voices of modern Bengali poetry. Although his life ended far too early, his influence continues to shine like a blazing star across the literary sky. On this solemn day, we bow our heads in deep respect.

A Short Life, Yet a Radiant Legacy
Born on 4 August 1947 in Barni village of Tungipara, Gopalganj, Abul Hasan (full name: Abul Hossain Mia) grew up amid the changing landscapes of his father’s postings in the police service. His ancestral home was in Jhanjhania village of Nazirpur, Pirojpur. The restlessness of childhood, the harshness of society, wandering from place to place, early encounters with injustice, tenderness and loss—all of these later transformed into the emotional fabric of his poetry.

Academic Promises and the Call of Journalism
Hasan completed his SSC from Armanitola Government School in 1963 and later studied at BM College, Barishal. He then enrolled in English Literature at the University of Dhaka. But even before sitting for his final examinations, journalism captured his mind. In 1969, he joined the prominent daily Ittefaq, and later served as Assistant Editor of Ganbangla and Janapad. His sharp observation, deep understanding of social realities and instinctive human sensitivity shaped the very heart of his poetic voice.

A New Current in Bengali Poetry
In barely ten years of creative work, Abul Hasan carved out a distinct school of poetry—marked by an intense awareness of death, profound loneliness, emotional fragmentation, unguarded love, memory, and an unfiltered expression of life’s wounds. His verses also echoed the passion of the Liberation War and the turbulent political landscape of the 60s and 70s.

Modern in approach yet deeply soulful, his poetry blended artistic elegance with raw human emotion. The youthful turmoil he experienced, his philosophical reflections on mortality, and his uncompromising search for meaning turned his works into powerful artistic statements. He gained international attention after winning first place in the 1970 Asian Poetry Contest.

His Works
His major poetry collections include Raja Jay Raja Ase (1972), Je Tumi Haran Koro (1974) and Prithak Palank (1975). His play Ora Koekjon and the posthumously published Collected Stories of Abul Hasan further established his literary versatility.

Awards and Honours
Abul Hasan received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1975. In recognition of his remarkable contributions, he was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1982.

Gone Too Soon, Yet Forever Alive
On 26 November 1975, at only 28 years of age, he left the world. But his poetry has outlived him—still stirring readers, still comforting wounded hearts, still shining with a timeless radiance. On his death anniversary, we pray for his eternal peace and reaffirm that his words will continue to illuminate our path for generations.
