A 27-year-old employee of a five-star hotel was found dead in an open field near Inani Beach in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, with visible injury marks on his body, prompting his family to allege that he may have been deliberately killed.
Police recovered the body of Abdul Aziz, son of Rashid Ahmed of Jummapara in Ward No. 1 of Jaliapalong Union, from an empty area beside the staff quarters of the five-star Bay Watch Hotel shortly after midnight on Thursday. The location was on the eastern side of Inani Beach.
Aziz was responsible for looking after the hotel’s cattle farm and had been working there for nearly a year. He lived in the hotel’s staff accommodation as part of his employment.
Police prepared an inquest report on Thursday afternoon and sent the body to the morgue at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Investigators said the examination would be crucial in determining the exact cause and circumstances of his death.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Majumder said Aziz’s body was found lying in an open area to the north of the hotel’s staff quarters. Several injury marks were visible on different parts of his body, although the precise cause of the death had not yet been established.
The officer said police were investigating the incident and that the findings of the post-mortem examination would help clarify what had happened.
Aziz’s wife, Sayka Yasmin, said her husband had left home on Tuesday afternoon and returned to his workplace at the hotel. She last spoke to him by phone at around 11am on Wednesday. She later learnt at about 1am that his body had been found lying in a field.
According to the family, Aziz may have been beaten or strangled before his body was left in the open area. They have called for a thorough investigation to establish whether the death was the result of a criminal act and to identify those responsible. The family said they planned to file a case in connection with the incident.
The death has left Aziz’s family facing an uncertain future. His wife said the couple had three daughters and that she was now deeply worried about how she would support and raise the children following her husband’s death.
Ukhiya Upazila BNP General Secretary Soltan Mahmud Chowdhury described Aziz as a hardworking young man and said the circumstances surrounding his death appeared suspicious. He called for a proper investigation and urged the authorities to examine CCTV footage from the hotel’s staff quarters, which could potentially provide important clues about Aziz’s movements and the events leading up to his death.
Bay Watch Hotel Deputy General Manager Enayet Ullah confirmed that Aziz worked at the hotel’s cattle farm and was a local resident. He said the hotel authorities had no clear information about how Aziz died.
Police have yet to determine whether the injuries were directly linked to his death or whether any other circumstances were involved. The post-mortem report, CCTV footage and other evidence gathered during the investigation are expected to play a key role in establishing the sequence of events. Until those findings are available, the exact circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear.
