An Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidate from Chittagong’s Hathazari Upazila succumbed to his injuries on Monday, 7 September, nearly a week after being involved in a violent road accident. The student, identified as Mahin, passed away at around 9:45 am whilst receiving intensive treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The tragedy stems from a head-on collision between a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw and a microbus on 2 September. The crash occurred along the Hathazari-Nazirhat road, directly in front of Charia Board School within the Mirzapur Union. Four HSC candidates traveling in the auto-rickshaw sustained critical injuries during the impact. The driver of the three-wheeler, 35-year-old Md Ershad, died instantly at the scene, whilst three occupants of the microbus also suffered varying degrees of injury.
Following the collision, emergency services and local residents rushed the injured to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for immediate medical attention. Among the injured candidates, two others were later identified as Tausif Ahmed Rafi and Erfanul Anwar Fahim. As Mahin’s physical condition deteriorated rapidly due to severe trauma, medical authorities recommended an immediate transfer to the capital for specialized tertiary care. He was subsequently admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where he fought for his life for several days before ultimately passing away on Monday morning.
The news of Mahin’s untimely death has cast a heavy pall of gloom over his native village of Nangalmora and the wider academic community in Hathazari. Local residents expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a promising young student on the verge of completing his higher secondary education, offering heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari Model Police Station, Zahidur Rahman, confirmed the fatality, stating that law enforcement had been informed by family members that Mahin’s body was being transported from Dhaka back to Nangalmora for burial procedures. He added that police officers are pursuing necessary legal actions under relevant traffic and road safety regulations regarding the incident.
