Both Brazil and Argentina have received unwelcome injury news just days before their upcoming international friendlies, potentially complicating their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães has withdrawn from the squad due to a knee injury sustained during Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final last Sunday. Although Magalhães played the full 90 minutes, he reported pain in his right knee after the match.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed on its official website:
“Following assessment, Gabriel Magalhães is not fit to participate in FIFA international matches. No replacement player will be called up for these friendlies.”
Brazil’s upcoming friendly schedule is as follows:
| Match | Date | Kick-off (Bangladesh Time) | Opponent | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friendly 1 | 27 March 2026 | Evening | France | Brazil |
| Friendly 2 | 1 April 2026 | Early Morning | Croatia | Brazil |
Magalhães’s absence leaves Brazil without a direct replacement in defence, forcing coach Carlo Ancelotti to adjust his backline plans ahead of the World Cup.
Argentina have also been hit with defensive injuries. Right-back Gonzalo Montiel has been ruled out of the next two friendlies after sustaining a hamstring injury while playing for River Plate against Estudiantes on Sunday. Montiel’s absence has opened the door for Nahuel Molina of Atlético Madrid, who has been in excellent form in Spain’s top division.
In addition, centre-back Leonardo Balerdi of Olympique Marseille will miss the friendlies. His replacement is Lucas Martínez Quarta, also from River Plate, making his first national team call-up since the 2024 Copa América.
Argentina’s friendlies ahead of the 2026 World Cup will take place at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires against Mauritania and Zambia:
| Match | Date | Kick-off | Opponent | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friendly 1 | 27 March 2026 | Evening | Mauritania | La Bombonera, Buenos Aires |
| Friendly 2 | 31 March 2026 | Evening | Zambia | La Bombonera, Buenos Aires |
These injuries create tactical challenges for both South American giants. Brazil must adapt its defensive strategy without Magalhães, while Argentina is tasked with integrating Martínez Quarta and Molina into key positions ahead of high-profile matches. These friendlies will be critical for assessing squad depth and readiness ahead of the World Cup.
With the clock ticking, both teams face added pressure to manage player fitness and maintain competitive cohesion, highlighting the fine balance between preparation and player welfare at the highest level.
